REUTERS (1990-Present)

 

January 2006-Present: Desk Editor, Treasury Desk – New York

 

Edits stories about the U.S. and Latin American economies and the foreign exchange and fixed-income markets. Also prepares the Front Page, an online summary of the top 10-12 financial and general news stories, with pictures, for premium clients.

 

January 2005-December 2005: Training Editor, Bangalore Polling Unit and Bangalore Ratings Unit – Bangalore, India

 

Managed new team that polls economists for forecasts of economic indicators, currency rates and central bank decisions, then publishes results to clients, including major investment banks. Unit works in close coordination with London, New York and other Reuters bureaus. Responsibilities included hiring and training team members in polling techniques and economics.

 

Recruited, trained and managed team that codes bond ratings releases from ratings agencies Standard & Poors, Fitch and Moody’s.

 

July 2003-December 2004: Manager, Journalist Test Team, News2Web Program – London

 

Led team of veteran Reuters journalists testing new editing system as part of global project to revamp editorial technology. In addition to designing and executing tests and reporting results, team provided feedback across the program and helped support journalists using new system.

 

August 2000-July 2003: Editor, User Acceptance Team, News2Web Program – London and New York

 

Helped design, build and test new editing system. Compiled system requirements from Reuters journalists. Designed and executed tests for system.

 

January 1999-August 2000: Editor, Internet Report and Technology Report – New York

 

Founding editor for online reports on the Internet and on telecommunications, computers and other technology for clients that included The New York Times and Yahoo. Helped coordinate technology coverage by Reuters bureaus in the United States and Canada, including overseeing regular columns on technology. Wrote weekly column about the Internet aimed at general audience.

 

Acted as editorial coordinator for Y2K coverage in the Americas, writing main global story when Reuters America was responsible for the story on Jan. 1, 2000, and in the days after.

 

Wrote and conducted courses on using the Internet, spreadsheets and databases for journalism. Taught computer-assisted reporting courses in London, Washington and New York. As chairman of global Internet Editorial Task Force, helped develop style and policy for online journalism and new ways of using the Net.

 

1996-December 1998: Editor, Reuters Business Report – New York

 

Edited, wrote and filed business news aimed primarily at general audience in the United States and abroad, working closely with correspondents. Played valuable role as specialist in the Internet and other technology stories.

 

1990-1996: Desk Editor,  Reuters World Desk – New York

 

Edited, wrote and filed general news from around the world in both American and British English. Biggest stories: 1991 Gulf War, 1992 U.S. presidential campaign, 1994 congressional elections, O.J. Simpson case.

1995-2000: Adjunct Professor – New York

 

Taught intensive courses on the Internet, spreadsheets and databases to graduate and mid-career fellowship students. Acted as informal liaison between school and Reuters. Taught computer-assisted reporting course at Columbia in 1998 to first group of German business journalists enrolled in Bertelsmann Summer Academy, held in United States and Germany.

 

 

ASSOCIATED PRESS (1980-1990)

 

1983-1990: Reporter and Editor, General Desk – New York

 

As part of AP national desk, edited and reported major stories, including the space shuttle Challenger disaster, the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, and the 1980, 1984 and 1988 U.S. presidential campaigns. Promoted to national editor, responsible for all U.S. coverage outside Washington, and then weekend desk supervisor, responsible for all U.S. and international coverage and output.

 

1980-1983: Reporter and Editor, South Carolina Bureau – Columbia

 

Wrote and edited state newspaper and broadcast copy. Reported on state government, crime, sports and other stories for state, regional and national audiences.

1978-1980: Reporter – Spartanburg and Laurens, South Carolina

 

Covered crime, politics and other local news from two bureaus for one of the state’s biggest-circulation newspapers.

 

 

O T H E R   T E A C H I N G

 

Freelance work, including one-day course in Internet journalism at Crain's Chicago Business weekly. Wrote and conducted simulated G-7 terrorist attack journalism exercise at Glasgow’s Strathclyde University with former Reuters Managing Editor Tom Thomson in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
